General George Pickett and the Pig War
C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2013 LCV Cities Tour” in Bellingham, Washington, from December 9-12 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Michael Vouri, Chief of Interpretation and Historian for San Juan Island National Historical Park, talked about George Edward Pickett and his role in the Pig War, a territorial confrontation in 1859 between the United States and the British Empire. The territory in dispute was the San Juan Islands, and the confrontation began when an American farmer shot a pig that belonged to Britain’s Hudson Bay Company. General Pickett was a career United States Army officer who became a general in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. He is best remembered for his participation at the Battle of Gettysburg that bears his name.
