Secretary Mineta testified about the fiscal year 2006 Transportation Department budget proposal. It was noted that the administration’s surface program budget was $3 billion less that the House-passed reauthorization legislation, and that airport grants were cut by $500 million. Topics included increased flexibility for state spending on highways, increased transit spending, decreased spending for airport enhancements, and the need for more air traffic controllers. President Bush’s budget proposal does not include further subsidies for Amtrak. close
