Tom Crouch spoke about the evolution of aviation and the centuries-old quest for flight. Mr. Crouch used slides of early designs and sketches in order to illuminate the forerunners of modern aviation, such as the Chinese kites of 1000 B.C., to the wind tunnels and gliders of the late 1800s. He discussed the ideas of earlier scientists and engineers such as Chanute and Langley, whose contraptions and models were used as springboards for the Wright brothers. After his talk, Mr. Crouch answered questions from members of the audience.

Tom Crouch is the author of A Dream of Wings: Americans and the Airplane, 1875-1905, published by W. W. Norton and Co. close
