In a surprise Thanksgiving visit, President Bush addressed approximately 600 U.S. troops at Baghdad International Airport. He thanked the soldiers for their service, praised their work in Iraq, and assured them that their country supported them. He also reiterated that the United States would remain in Iraq as long as necessary, and would ultimately prevail. The president received several standing ovations from the assembly. Following his speech, President Bush walked through the crowd, posing for photographs and talking with soldiers.
