Subcommittee members heard testimony from FAA officials concerning the investigation into the safety record of ValuJet airlines. They testified about why the agency did not shut down the airline sooner and why it initially stated that ValuJet was safe to fly after the crash of flight 592. They attributed most of the airline’s safety problems to its rapid growth rate. They also testified about the possible contradictions between the FAA’s dual mission of promoting and ensuring the safety of U.S. aviation. close
