The House Small Business Subcommittee on Regulation, Business Opportunity, and Energy reviewed the 1989 decision by the Food and Drug Administration to ban the importation of the French drug RU486 or mifepristone. Testimony was heard on the effect this ban has had on medical research in the United States and on the approval of new drugs which may have multiple benefits. RU486 functioned primarily as a successful alternative to surgical abortion in France. It also had success in treating brain cancer, breast cancer, and Cushing’s syndrome. Researchers in the U.S. wanted access to the drug because its ability to interfere with human hormonal processes may have numerous other medical applications. close
