The subcommittee heard testimony examining U.S. policy regarding human rights conditions in Tibet, in light of reported Peoples Republic of China (PRC) government repression following a 1987 public demonstration in Lhasa, Tibet. Representative Charlie Rose gave his perspective on PRC-Tibet relations and alleged human rights abuses in Tibet and his views on U.S. policy regarding Tibet. Deputy Secretary Stapleton clarified and defended the U.S. policy response to human rights abuses in Tibet. Messrs. Norbu, Tethong, Avedon, and Sperling, all representing the Asia Watch Committee, gave their perspectives on Buddhism and the extent of religious freedom in Tibet. close
