Swanson presented a dramatic retelling of the events of April 14, 1865, when assassin John Wilkes Booth shot President Abraham Lincoln while the president was watching a performance of Our American Cousin at Ford’s Theatre. The evening event took place on the 144th anniversary of the Lincoln assassination. The Federal City Brass Band played during the event.
James Swanson is the author of Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer (Harper Perennial) and the just-published Chasing Lincoln’s Killer (Scholastic Press), an account for young readers of the events surrounding the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. He also collaborated with the Newseum on the museum’s “Manhunt” exhibition, on display at that time, that featured 40 artifacts and documents from Mr. Swanson’s personal collection, many of which were being displayed publicly for the first time.
