The committee heard testimony on the results of the 1982 federal court decision requiring the giant telephone corporation AT&T to divest its local operating companies and maintain itself only as a long distance telephone carrier. Witnesses including telephone communications executives and telephone industry lobbyists. Issues brought up during the hearing included the Congress' control of the telecommunications industry, the powers allowed and denied local operating facilities and long-distance giant AT&T, and the resulting competitiveness of the telephone industry. close
