The committee heard testimony from Director O’Neill on the Congressional Budget Office’s annual report on the U.S. economy and the budget outlook. She said that the budget deficit is lower than a year ago, partly because of welfare reform legislation passed by the 104th Congress. She also noted that the economy is doing well and that the Gross Domestic Product has been growing at an average annual rate of 2.2 percent. close
