The Senate Armed Services Committee held a hearing on military operations in Iraq, the strength of the insurgency movement, force levels and structure, and strategies for future operations in Iraq. Witnesses also testified about the nature of various threats to U.S. national security, planning for operations to combat terrorism within and outside Iraq, and calls by some members of Congress and the public to reduce the levels of troop commitment to Iraq. In sometimes contentious exchanges, Secretary Rumsfled’s decision making and previous representations to Congress and the public, as well as the administration’s statements regarding the state of opposition to Iraq policy was criticized. close
