Witnesses testified about a proposed presidential pay increase from $200,000 to $400,000 which would take effect when the next president was sworn in in 2001. Former White House officials supported the raise noting that a similar job in the private sector would receive a far higher salary. Mr. Ruskin objected to the raise saying that the president already earned more than 99 percent of the American public and that any further raise would erode the president’s moral authority to lead. close
