The Senate Foreign Relations Committee held a hearing about U.S. Policy towards Iran.

William Luers of the U.N. Association of the U.S. reported on the discussions that he had been holding in Europe with Iranians and former officials over the last year and their attitudes as well as some problems that could be resolved. Among the opinions of the Iranians that need to be changed before progress is made is their believe that the U.S. wants a change in regime.

Professor Nasser Hadian of Tehran University reported that conflicting domestic views in Iran complicate compliance with the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.

Anthony Cordesman of the Center for Strategic & International Studies believes that relations with Iran could be eased, but that Iran would not be able to reach formal agreements until its internal issues are resolved. He reminded the committee that Iran has a long history of secret nuclear projects and doubted the ability of intelligence services to discover close
