Jan Herman, historian and author of The Lucky Few: The Fall of Saigon and the Rescue Mission of the USS Kirk, talked about the USS Kirk’s humanitarian mission to rescue refugees during the fall of Saigon. With him was Captain Paul Jacobs, who served as commander of the USS Kirk during the rescue. At the end of the Vietnam War in April 1975, after the last Americans had been evacuated from Saigon, a small destroyer escort ship, the USS Kirk, was given orders to return. Its mission was to rescue the ships of the South Vietnamese Navy and tens of thousands of Vietnamese refugees.
