The Senate Armed Services Committee heard testimony on the U.S. role in the Persian Gulf war from Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, commander of the allied forces during the war. Gen. Schwarzkopf criticized U.S. intelligence on the Middle East, saying the intelligence received by the military in the field had been either choked with disclaimers or so cautious as to be almost useless. He advocated a single method of intelligence coordination and preparation to reduce confusion in the field. Although Gen. Schwarzkopf praised the efforts of the intelligence agencies in gathering information, he complained about the presentation of the information to the military leaders. He did not name which specific intelligence agency was to blame for the confusion. He also favored increased participation of women in combat, given duties that match their abilities but frowned upon the participation of women in trench combat. He also said he did not favor the continuation of the ground war in Iraq. close
