Currently, a 1948 law prohibits women from serving in combat positions. The Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force still operate under that statute. Although not bound by the combat exclusion law, the Army excludes women from combat duty as a matter of internal policy. The subcommittee heard testimony from officers and enlisted personnel from all four branches. Generals Vuono and Gray opposed repealing the ban on women serving in ground combat positions.
