The Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Science, Technology, and Space heard testimony from a NASA official and a space policy analysts on the redesign of the Space Station Freedom and the restructuring of the space station program. Earlier in the year, President Clinton approved a modified, reduced-cost version of the space station, and the House approved funding for the project by a close vote the previous week. The witnesses discussed the reductions made in the project, the goals and scientific objectives of the smaller space station program, and the potential benefits of continuing the project. Funding for the space station was due to come before the Senate later in the week. close
