A panel celebrated the life of Rachel Carson on the centennial of her birth. Rachel Carson has been called the woman who launched the modern environmental movement with the publication of Silent Spring in 1962. A video clip was shown of President Kennedy mentioning her at a press conference on August 29, 1962.
Stewart Udall made the opening remarks and read the passage that Rachel Carson had requested to be read at her funeral. Ms. Smith gave a brief biography and then moderated a discussion of the importance of the work of Rachel Carson and the history of the scientific environemental movement.
