The committee heard testimony from Mr. Reilly, head of the Environmental Protection Agency, and Mr. Loehr on the strategy the U.S. should take on the environment based on the estimated risks of individual environmental threats. Mr. Reilly said he was attempting to base the decision making processes of the Agency on science-based principles rather than upon “middle-class” enthusiasms. He stated his desires for U.S. environmental policies to be based as much as possible on the public’s perceptions and desires for priorities, but the public must be informed by science what the estimated risks of certain environmental priorities are. Mr. Loehr summarized the Science Advisory committee’s report on the estimated risks of existing environmental hazards. close
