Pageants, Parlors, and Pretty Women
C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2017 LCV Cities Tour” in Fresno, California, from January 7-13 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Comcast cable local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed. The history segments air on American History TV (AHTV) on C-SPAN3 and the literary events/non-fiction author segments air on Book TV on C-SPAN2.

Blain Roberts talked about her book Pageants, Parlors, and Pretty Women: Race and Beauty in the Twentieth-Century South, in which she looks at the role of beauty in the racial conflicts in the South during the 1950s and 1960s. Ms. Roberts said Jim Crow era cosmetics companies sold beauty products that emphasized whiteness, and black beauty parlors were key sties of resistance during the Civil Rights movement.
