He argued that despite being commonly known as the “siege” of Petersburg, both the Confederate and Union armies were mobile along the battle lines. Mr. Alexander focused on the Federal assault on April 2 which finally broke through the Confederate line. After this attack, Confederate General Robert E. Lee retreated west from Richmond and Petersburg and just one week later surrendered his army at Appomattox, effectively ending the Civil War.
