Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon resigned as leader of the Likud Party and announced he is forming a new political party. He requested that the Knesset be dissolved and elections be held in Israel early next year. He explained his decision and answered questions from reporters.

Prime Minister Sharon helped establish Likud in 1973, but hardliners within the party opposed his plan to withdraw from Gaza. News reports described the new party as moderate, somewhere between Likud and the Labor Party on the political spectrum.
