The Environment and Public Works committee’s Gulf Pollution Task Force heard testimony on the effect of the Kuwaiti oil well fires set by retreating Iraqi soldiers on humans and the environment in the area. The oil fires, which have burned unabated since near the end of the Persian Gulf war, create 500,000 tons of air pollutants per week, which have a disastrous effect on Iraqi residents, animals, and the U.S. troops stationed in the area. close
