President Obama made an unannounced appearance before the regular White House briefing to speak about the verdict in the Trayvon Martin case in Florida. Speaking extemporaneously, he urged people to accept the not-guilty verdict for George Zimmerman while empathizing with critics of the jury verdict. He recalled his own experiences and the experiences of typical members of the African-American community in which racial profiling and suspicion had been a part of daily life. President Obama said that “When Trayvon Martin was first shot, I said that this could have been my son. Another way of saying that is, Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago.” He said more needed to be done to fight prejudice and to “bolster and reinforce” African-American male youths. He also talked about providing law enforcement officers with more training in racial bias and about examining state “stand your ground” laws. close
