Kyle Ward examined how history textbooks have depicted historical subjects and events over a span of time. In each chapter of his book he looks at a specific historical topic, from Pocahontas to the Mexican-American War, and presents a collection of passages from a range of textbook publication dates to illustrate how depictions each topic may have changed over time.
The Floyd and Walker Family Collection of 19th century textbooks inspired his research for his books Not Written in Stone: Learning and Unlearning American History through 200 Years of Textbooks and History in the Making: An Absorbing Look at How American History Has Changed in the Telling over the Last 200 Years. He responded to questions from members of the audience.
