Hampton Sides talked about his book, In the Kingdom of Ice: The Grand and Terrible Polar Voyage of the USS Jeannette, in which he recounts the U.S. naval expedition to the North Pole in 1879. The journey, financed by New York Herald owner James Gordon Bennett, and led by Officer George Washington De Long, began in San Francisco on July 8, 1879. The 32-man crew aboard the USS Jeannette sailed for two years before a breach of the ship’s hull left them abandoned 1,000 miles north of Siberia, and forced them to trek back to civilization. Mr. Sides showed numerous slides during his presentation and then responded to questions from members of the audience. close
