Winston Groom recounts General Stephen Watts Kearney’s command of 2,000 American soldiers who marched from Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, to California in 1846. General Kearney was under orders from President James Polk to acquire Mexico’s northern territories, land that would make up a large portion of America’s southwestern states. Mr. Groom examines General Kearney’s travels, the acquisition of land, and the rapid westward expansion of the United States. He also responded to questions from members of the audience.
