The Senate Armed Services Committee held a hearing on military operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and efforts to combat terrorism. Witnesses testified about new troop deployments in Iraq, the security situation in Afghanistan, operational readiness issues, and the status of training security forces. They also answered questions from members about a number of issues including the state of sectarian violence in Iraq, previous assessments of the nature of insurgent activity by Iraqi militia forces, the possibility of civil war in Iraq, and the future of U.S. military activity in the region. They also remarked on the potential impact of conflict between Israeli military forces and Hezbollah units in Lebanon. close
