Constructed between 1871-1886, the building has a 275 foot, 23 karat gold-leafed dome. The Capitol houses the governor’s offices, legislature, and the old Supreme Court Chambers. The ornate interior also features a grand staircase, murals, and a five-story law library.
C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2014 LCV Cities Tour” in Des Moines, Iowa, from June 22-26 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Mediacom cable local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed. The history segments aired on American History TV (AHTV) on C-SPAN3 and the literary events/non-fiction author segments aired on BookTV on C-SPAN2.
