Following remarks by Strobe Talbott, Brookings Institute president and former Deputy Secretary of State, and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg (R) on poverty and social policy, participants talked about a recent report by the Census Bureau on poverty and family income for 2006. The report indicated that the poverty rate had decreased for the first time in several years, but that uninsurance rates continued to climb. They talked about interpretations of the data and the potential impact on public policy. They also answered questions from the audience. close
