Colman McCarthy talked to students about his latest work, I’d Rather Teach Peace, published by Orbis Books. In 1982, Mr. McCarthy was asked to teach a writing course at the School Without Walls in Washington, D.C. A Washington Post columnist at the time, he responded by saying “I’d rather teach peace.” Mr. McCarthy has conducted nonviolence, pacifism, and conflict management courses in schools all over the United States, introducing more than 5,000 students to “the literature of peace” and activists such as Mahatma Gandhi, Cesar Chavez and Martin Luther King, Jr. The book follows Mr. McCarthy through six schools during the course of one semester, and outlines his process for motivating students to explore issues related to peace. During his presentation, he invited three of his former students to the stage and told short stories about each of them. He also answered questions from members of the audience. close
