Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell (D-ME) and Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Sam Nunn (D-GA) responded to questions from reporters on the ban on homosexuals in the military. DOD Secretary Les Aspin said they were working on a compromise on ending the ban, including a six-month delay in ending the ban and consultation with members of the military. Following the democratic leadership, Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-SC), Sen. Daniel Coats (R-IN), and Sen. Phil Gramm (R-TX) spoke to reporters about their opposition to the lifting the ban. close
