Robert Zarate and Henry D. Sokolski talked about the book they edited, Nuclear Heuristics: Selected Writings of Albert and Roberta Wohlstetter (Strategic Studies Institute, U.S. Army War College; January 26, 2009). It is a collection of important published and unpublished essays by Albert Wohlstetter (1913-1997) and Roberta Wohlstetter (1912-2007), pioneers of nuclear-age policy analysis. The Wohlstetters were influential within both Democratic and Republican political circles throughout the Cold War and their selected writings range through their thoughts on nuclear proliferation, deterrence, and the possibility of non-nuclear technologies. The editors were joined by Andrew Marshall and Richard Perle is a discussion that included the role of nuclear weapons in U.S. security alliances and how nuclear policies might affect the spread of nuclear weapon technologies. Panelists responded to audience members' questions following their discussion.
