Thomas Devine talked about Henry Wallace’s 1948 campaign for president as the nominee of the Progressive Party. Henry Wallace served as Vice President under President Franklin D. Roosevelt before being replaced by Harry Truman for the 1944 election. Professor Devine argued that Wallace’s campaign strategy of focusing on courting minorities in the Jim Crow South alienated much of the white electorate. Despite Wallace’s efforts, Professor Devine said that the majority of African Americans decided to vote for President Truman. close
