Dr. Fauci talked about HIV/AIDS research and treatment and the HIV epidemic in Washington, D.C. He responded to calls from listeners.

A report issued recently by the District of Columbia Department of Health shows that 3% of the city’s residents are infected with HIV, although officials believe the true figure is even higher. 1% is the typical threshold that constitutes a generalized and severe epidemic. The rate of new cases in D.C. is 11 times higher than the national average. An estimated one million people are currently living with HIV in the U.S., with approximately 40,000 new infections occurring each year. One third of them do not know they are HIV-positive. close
