The Supreme Court heard oral argument in Endrew F. v. Douglas County School District, which concerns the level of support public schools are required to give students with disabilities. In 1975 Congress passed the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act that requires school districts to provide individually-designed public education for each child with a disability in exchange for federal funds for these services. Endrew F. is an autistic child whose parents argue that their son’s public school education did not go far enough in helping him. They appealed a lower court’s decision denying their request to be reimbursed for sending him to a private school.
In March 2017 the court unanimously ruled that schools must provide students with disabilities educational programs beyond the minimum standard. close
