House Judiciary Committee members debated the provisions of H.R. 25, the Freedom of Choice Act. Proponents expressed that the bill would simply codify Roe v. Wade, while opponents feared it would take the landmark case further, preventing reasonable funding restrictions on abortions and requiring parental consent for abortions. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner said he found it ironic that the Freedom of Choice Act denies doctors and nurses the freedom to choose not to perform abortions based on moral or religious grounds. Rep. Chuck Schumer said Roe has become a mere façade due to yesterday’s Supreme Court decision on a Pennsylvania abortion case, and he stressed urgency in moving forward with H.R. 25. close
