Conflict in Former Yugoslavia

President George H.W. Bush spoke at a microphone in front of his vacation home in Kennebunkport, Maine, on his meeting earlier in the day with his National Security Adviser Brent Scowcroft, Ambassador Watson of the U.S. mission to the U.N., Deputy Sec. of State Eagleburger and Secretary of Defense Richard Cheney on the situation in Bosnia. President Bush commented on the opening of the airport in Bosnia for shipments of humanitarian aid and reports of detention camps run by Serbs. He said he would not rule in or out the use of force in the region and called for the U.N. to allow the use of force to bring an end to the fighting in the war-torn states of the former Yugoslavia. In answering questions from reporters on issues involved in the foreign policy concerning the situation in Bosnia, the president vehemently denied political considerations were involved in U.S. foreign policy in the region. close
