President Bush interrupted his vacation in Kennebunkport, Maine, to discuss the coup in the Soviet Union which occurred the previous day, when hard-line Communists took power in the Soviet Union from the administration of President Gorbachev. President Bush called the coup “a disturbing development,” and said the U.S. would follow the events of the coup carefully before determining a response. He also noted that “coups can fail,” but hoped the new leader, Yanayev, would not turn back the clock on democratic reforms. close
