Committee members heard testimony from William Cohen, President Clinton’s secretary of defense nominee. His testimony focused on various aspects of defense policy, including weapons modernization and a stronger U.S. presence in Asia. He also stressed that he would make sure that U.S. troops participating in the NATO sustaining force would completely leave Bosnia after 18 months and that he would communicate to Europe that the U.S. commitment there is not open-ended. The Senate confirmed him by a 99-0 vote about two hours after the hearing ended. close
