The House debated a short-term extension of federal transportation and highway funding which would be exhausted in September 2014. The Highway Trust Fund, which finances road, bridge, and mass-transit projects, was funded by an 18 cents-per-gallon gas tax, which had failed to keep up with inflation in recent years. The tax was bringing in about $34 billion per year, while the federal government spending was about $50 billion on road and transit projects. The House was debating an $11 billion extension to provide funding through the end of May 2015. close
