Historian Richard Norton Smith tours the Daniel Webster Memorial, located beside Washington, DC’s Scott Circle. Sculpted by Gaetano Trentanove, the statue was a gift of Washington Post founder Stilson Hutchins, and was dedicated in 1900.

Webster twice served as U.S. Secretary of State, and represented both New Hampshire and Massachusetts in Congress, serving in the House of Representatives for the former, and the Senate for the latter. With Henry Clay of Kentucky and John C. Calhoun of South Carolina, Webster was one third of the “Great Triumvirate” in the mid-19th century’s “Golden Age” of the U.S. Senate. close
