Mark Weadick, a forestry consultant and fur trade historian, talked about the the significance of the fur trade to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. He spoke about free hunters, who were French-speaking Iroquois Indians who signed on with fur traders to work six months for the company and six months trapping for themselves. Dressed as a free hunter, Mr. Weadick also spoke about the free hunters' impact on today’s world. The free traders coined the name Coeur d’Alene. The phrase, which translates into “Heart of an Awl” indicated that the Indians living in the area were sharp traders.
