President Obama urged Congress to extend middle class tax cuts associated with the “fiscal cliff.” He said he believed that members of both parties could agree to a compromise on deficit reduction before Christmas. 
“Fiscal cliff” referred to impending tax increases and budget cuts at the end of 2012 if Congress failed to reach a new budget agreement.
