Graham Hodges talked about his book David Ruggles: A Radical Black Aboliitonist and the Underground Railroad in New York City (University of North Carolina Press, 2010). David Ruggles was the best known “conductor” of the Underground Railroad in New York City and Frederick Douglass was one of 600 fugitives whom Mr. Ruggles sheltered in his home. Mr. Ruggles was unusual among abolitionists in refusing to rule out violence in helping fugitives and free blacks, arguing that self-protection was only sensible. Professor Hodges discussed his book on stage with Professor Foner. He also responded to questions from members of the audience.
