Ben S. Bernanke testified about his nomination as the chairman of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. Mr. Bernanke told the committee that his top priority would be to continue the policies of retiring chairman, Alan Greenspan, including his interest-rate policies and efforts to enhance transparency in the markets. He also testified about the adoption of specific inflation targets, an issue on which he and current Chairman Greenspan disagreed. Mr. Bernanke responded to questions regarding numerous economic topics including his inflation goal, job growth, and the potential risks of overseas investors holding U.S. government bonds. He also said he supported mandates to pursue maximum employment and that the U.S. current account deficit should be reduced. close
