The Committee on Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, State, and Judiciary held a hearing on the Fiscal Year 2000 appropriations. Supreme Court Justices David Souter and Clarence Thomas told the committee that the Supreme Court will take steps to hire more minority law clerks. They both pointed to the number of minorities in the top ranks of major law schools and among clerks for lower-court judges as the main reason for the Supreme Court’s poor record. Architect of the Capitol Alan Hantman talked about his budget request for the renovation of the U.S. Supreme Court building. close
