Panelists commemorated the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Bladensburg and the burning of Washington, D.C., during the War of 1812. On August 24, 1814, British soldiers defeated American troops at the Battle of Bladensburg just outside the nation’s capital. The British forces then marched into the city and burned down the White House, the U.S. Capitol, and other government buildings.
