Witnesses testified before the House Agriculture Committee on the importation of beef and cattle from Canada, past discoveries of “mad cow” disease in Canadian herds, the current and future safety of the beef supply in North America, and the impact on agricultural markets and prices in the U.S.

The Agriculture department announced a rule on December 29, 2004 that would lift some of the restrictions on the importation of beef from Canada. On February 9, 2005, Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns announced that he would delay implementing some parts of the rule. close
