In the first panel, witnesses testified about the necessity for an anthrax vaccine since anthrax is easy to make and extremely dangerous. The panelists argued for the safety of the vaccine and that there are only minor adverse side effects. A videotape was shown that revealed that the anthrax vaccine has a good safety record. Based on the health problems of Gulf War veterans, there has been reluctance to take the vaccine among many military personnel because they do not trust the government in regard to some health issues. In the second panel, witnesses opposed vaccines for biological weapons and the mandatory anthrax vaccine policy. Private Lundbom described the punishment he and others received for refusing the vaccine. Mr. Zaid talked about the legal issues involved when military personnel refused the mandatory vaccine. close
